Our Story
-
July 2021
After two years of planning—and more setbacks than we ever expected—Christy and Aaron, along with two of our three children, James and Tanner, set out on a mission close to our hearts. That mission became Overland 4 Heroes, our family’s journey to raise awareness and support for veterans.
_
Over ten days on the road, we navigated remote terrain and completed nine rugged off-road trails that took anywhere from three to seven hours of hard wheeling. We pushed through mechanical failures, unpredictable weather, and all the natural challenges that come with overlanding, documenting every moment along the way.
In doing so, we dedicated trails in honor of fellow veterans by sharing their stories, their service, and their sacrifices to keep our country free. We also dedicated trails in memory of fallen veterans—sharing their stories and involving their families to honor the lives they so selflessly gave.-
Our “why” was simple but powerful: the difficult trails and the isolation of remote camping symbolized the challenging and often unseen journey many veterans face after service.
-
By the end of our trip, we had raised $2,600 in support of our mission and honored a Purple Heart recipient with a special dedication—bringing meaning and purpose to every mile we traveled.
Expanding the Mission
-
When we returned home, we felt a strong pull to do more. We wanted other veterans to have the chance to experience their own grand adventures in the wilderness—to heal, reconnect, and discover the grounding power of the outdoors the way we had.
-
After several years of planning, we launched Built to Roam Rental Co. in April 2025, providing access to overland-ready gear rentals so others could experience the outdoors without the stress or cost of gear ownership. Every rental directly supports our veteran-focused nonprofit partners, Boot Campaign and Fox Bravo Overland, helping to give back to the communities that inspired our mission.
-
Building on that foundation, we created Overland4Heroes.com our "Gear That Gives Back Store," powered by Operation Give Back, an initiative designed to fund future veteran adventures and expand the impact of our work.
